“For us, filling our stomach was the way to satiate our hunger. We did not consider nutrition as an important criterion in our diet. But now we understand that it is not about how much we eat, but what we eat! Consuming nutritious food is important for a healthy life and it can be possible with the resources that we have.”
This level of awareness of Jomi Malto of Bada Sindri village of in Sunderpahari block of Jharkhand has been possible because of the extensive awareness on the linkage of nutrition and health in the villages. In addition to creating awareness on the core causes of malnutrition, Navriti Foundation is supporting the poor Pahariya households in the villages to also develop nutrition gardens or Poshan Varis close to their homes.
Godda district of Jharkhand has poor health metrics related to nutrition:
54% children under 5 years show stunting,
46% children are underweight and
71.6% of women are anaemic
Saurya Pahariya a tribal community in Jharkhand categorised as Primitive tribes are further vulnerable due to lack of access to basic infrastructure, poor socio-economic condition and other cultural factors that contribute to the perpetuation of the cycle of malnourishment. This impacts physical and cognitive well being of the community which affects their overall development.
Establishing a household nutrition garden may sound quite simple, but even for agrarian communities like the Pahariyas, availability of quality seeds, knowledge of multi-tier farming model with effective utilisation of space are some challenges that need to be overcome to have an assured supply of vegetables as per season.
As an intervention, Poshan Vari provides a rich blend of seeds of local varieties of vegetables and green leafy vegetables to increase availability and diversity of food in rural households.
Namita Paharin is happy that she can provide nutritious food for her family from the 12 sq. feet Poshan Vari at the back of her house. Small but significant support to deprived families have a multiplier effect on their lives. In addition to providing nutrition, the supply of vegetables from the gardens also results in saved income of at least Rs. 1200-1500 per month for buying vegetables.
Navriti Foundation is working to scale the Poshan Varis across 1000 Pahariya households in Sunderpahari and Littipara blocks of Godda and Pakur district. Your support for this endeavour would help poor households achieve better health and move ahead to overcome the chains of poverty. You can help by contributing in the following way:
A support of Rs. 500 for one family would cover the cost of 10 varieties of seeds of vegetables and greens for a 15 square feet Poshan vari.
1 Family: Rs. 500
3 Family: Rs. 1500
5 Family: Rs. 2500
Other: Any Amount
Our target is to support 1000 households over the next three months for which we plan to raise at least Rs. 500,000. Navriti Foundation would report back to the contributors on the families supported for the Poshan Varis alongwith pictures.
Let’s join together in changing lives through better health!
